About Me

Unique Original Contemporary Oil Paintings by Multi-Award-Winning Australian Artist Karsten Stier fusing realism, surrealism, and social commentary

I’m an artist with over forty years of experience, and my work has been recognized with multiple awards. Over the years, I’ve been featured in newspapers, online publications, art books, and even a science book.

My paintings are held in private collections across Australia, the United States, Europe, and Japan.

I have always found that sticking to one particular style or artistic technique to be too restrictive to fully articulate what I’m trying to express my art. Bending the so-called ‘Art rules’ allows me the freedom to experiment a lot more and incorporate the fusion of several different types of techniques and art styles. This gives me the freedom to remain more true to the mood of the artwork. . .

I often find myself needing to clarify that I don’t use an airbrush. The smoothness and detail in my work come purely from traditional brushwork.

At the heart of what I do is the desire to capture the fleeting moment — that sudden, unfiltered glimpse before we often recognize it for what it actually is. Much of my work is rooted in Social Commentary: the interactions between people and their environment, the fortunate and the unfortunate, the unspoken norms and taboos we live with, the quiet drama of our conscious and subconscious hopes, fears, and desires. What motivates us to be who we are..?

None of my images are cropped. Each painting is composed as you see it — allowing space for your imagination to move beyond the frame. And nothing is digitally enhanced. What you see is exactly how the work was painted. Some older images may appear slightly blurry, simply because they were photographed on outdated equipment — but the paintings themselves remain unchanged.
